How to Make Sure Your On-Page SEO is Up to Date

While you may think you know all you should know about on-page SEO, it’s important to know that it is always in a state of change, and you would do well to keep current with the latest best practices.

There’s more to this than just dropping in a keyword here and there: Google is constantly seeking ways to deliver better search results, and a byproduct of that is an environment where change is the only thing you can count on.

So to make sure you get off on the right footing as it regards your on-page SEO here are 7 tips you’ll want to ensure receive your full attention.

7 On-Page SEO Tips that You Need to Adopt If You Haven’t Already!

Title Tags and the page META Description – It’s important to get this right: Google wants to see no more than 60 characters in the title tags, and less than 160 in the META description. Try to employ your main page keyword in both, and make sure your description is one that will attract a visitor.

Utilize your Keywords – the right way! Don’t stuff your pages with them. In fact your primary keyword (the one in the title tag and description) should have a page density of between 1-3%.

Image tags – Be sure to tag your images’ ALT tags accurately. This will also help your images to get indexed in Google images, and get you more traffic.

Employ internal linking – Be sure to link to relevant and useful content within your own pages, preferably using keyword anchor text to get there. This is a major signal for Google that you are trying to be of use to your visitors.

Optimize for mobile search – Beginning April 2015, Google is going to penalize pages that aren’t optimized well for mobile. Since mobile traffic now accounts for more than 50% of all traffic, what do you think you should do?

Your business minutiae – Having an accurate privacy policy, contact us page, and terms of service indicates to Google that you are a serious business and is also a ranking signal.

Have Speedy page loads – If your pages aren’t loading in 4 seconds or less, you might have a problem. Look into compressing image files, or possibly even moving your web hosting if they are holding you back. This is a major ranking factor.

A Simple 7 Step SEO Strategy for 2016

Step One:  Begin with the End in Mind
When you have clear goals at the beginning stages of developing a strategy for SEO (or anything else for that matter), you increase your chances of success by 1000%.

So many businesses come to us with terrible websites that no amount of SEO can help them. No matter how well we might get them ranked in the search engines, their website is not going to make any sales, or develop a relationship, or turn a prospect into a lead. No amount of rankings can help a terrible site!
SEO has evolved into increasing revenue, not just rankings. The strategy laid out in this post is all about increasing sales, not gaining top ranking as an ego boost.

Step One in this SEO strategy is having a dynamic website that organizes your content in a way that is easy for search engines to crawl. The added bonus of organizing your site in ways that make it easy to read for the search engines is that it will also force you to organize your content in a way that is also easy to access for real people.

There are many Content Management Systems out there that will get the job done but we always recommend WordPress. It is easy enough to master for even the newest of newbie. It is also powerful enough to get the job done for multi-million dollar websites.
If you have a static website, which we often refer to as an outdated, ugly brochure website; then grab WordPress and a premium theme….instant dynamic website!
Now that you can add fresh content to your site in way that people and search engines will enjoy, you can move on to step 2.

Step Two: Keyword Research

If you are going to succeed with SEO, you have to know which keywords you want to be found for. It seems incredibly easy but lots of businesses get this wrong. They have trouble getting into the head of their customer and end up developing content that interests themselves or their peers.
They think of keywords they would use to find their business instead of learning how to think about their business in their customers’ language.
You need to try to see things from your customers’ perspective. Shed your curse of knowledge to see their problems and feel their pain.

When you are solving your prospects problems with your content, it becomes much easier for them to buy from you AND the search engines will reward your content!
If you want SEO success in 2013, you need to become an authority in your market.  Google wants to see that you are an authority on your topic. They care so much about this in fact – they developed AuthorRank, and understanding this new metric is a key to developing an SEO strategy for 2013 and beyond.
Why Authority Rules

It all boils down to the fact that Google wants to rank content that is written by an AUTHORity. Some SEO’s are arguing that this is the main driver behind their development of Google+.
Google wants to know who you are. They want you to claim authorship of your content.  And when you do, they reward you by showing your content to those who may be interested in it.
It is only a matter of time before anonymous content (read web spam) does not make it to the top of the search engines any more.  So, you need to become an authority…an authority on what, you ask?

On Your Keywords!

Do your research early and often in order to succeed at SEO. You need to know what terms you want to rank for next week and next year. Do your research to develop a few top level themes for your.
Research long tail keywords that can make excellent blog post titles. Learn to speak your customers’ language. What questions are they asking? How do they frame their questions? What do they type into Google?

Solid and ongoing keyword research is the cornerstone to any successful SEO strategy.

Step Three – Bake Your SEO Right In

Some folks still believe that SEO can be used as a silver bullet – only in moments when you need to rank your site for a certain term. But that just isn’t the case anymore.

As you can see with Steps 1 and 2 – SEO requires some planning and research to be effective. And as you are going to see in the next steps, you will also need to create and share some awesome content.
This third step is the bridge that brings it all together and creates a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

You need to bake your SEO into your website. Your title tags need to contain your overall keyword themes. Your meta-descriptions should be keyword rich and “sell the click!” Your header tags and blog post titles should contain language your prospects are using online. Your content needs to be relevant to your overall themes and long tail terms.

When you set your website up for success like this – the next steps in our SEO strategy become much easier. Proper on-page SEO techniques establish your websites relevancy in the eyes of the search engines. You are letting Google know the keywords where you think you deserve to rank well. Once this relevancy is established – when your SEO is baked right in – it becomes much easier for your new, fresh content to rank well quickly.

It is this new content that will draw in new visitors and turn them into new customers. And that brings us to step 4 in our 2013 SEO strategy…..

Step Four – Create Awesome Content

I know it is cliché now but content truly is king. It is especially supreme when it comes to SEO strategies that include AuthorRank and social media sharing.
Do you want to claim authorship on anything that isn’t your best work?
Do you want to share crappy content on Facebook, Twitter or Google+?
The internet has a very long memory. If you won’t share it with your circle of friends, how can you expect Google to share it with the world!
Lots of business owners cringe at the idea of blogging or creating content. When we first started recommending blogging as an SEO tactic, back in 2009, we presented it as optional. It is now the best way to separate yourself from your competitors and to do it in a way that promotes your website in the search engines.

If you can’t (or won’t) write relevant blog posts or produce some type of valuable content your audience wants and needs – then you have to find someone who can.
It is quite simple now really – produce excellent content or lose to your competitor who does.

Step Five -Share Your Excellent Content

So many businesses get social media sharing wrong. They work their ass off to get someone to their site – it’s on their business card, in their email signature and displayed in their advertising.  They tell people their URL at networking events and share it on LinkedIn.

And when they finally get you to their site…. they present you with a big Facebook icon and lead you away. WTF? Is it opposite day?

Use your Facebook page or other social media to introduce yourself. Getting to know your prospects in a light hearted environment (like Facebook or a live networking event) and then directing them to your site gives you the opportunity to walk them through a process that ends with them becoming a customer.
If someone walked into your brick and mortar store, would you say “thank you for stopping in, we like to hang out in the bar around the corner, why don’t you meet us over there?”
Would you let them know you were attending a Chamber Mixer later that night and you would love to “engage” with them there?

Of course not!

They are IN your store. You would see what you could do for them and lead them down a process that ends with them becoming a customer. And that process usually begins with the words “How Can I Help You?”
Use social media to expand your network and share your message. Use it to draw people into your storefront where you can ask them “How Can I Help You?” An awesome way to start the conversation on social media is to share your optimized content.
Don’t get caught in the trap of boosting your ego with likes, followers and plusses. A networking event isn’t about how many hands you can shake…it is about the relationships you can develop!

Step 6 – Get Permission to Develop Those Relationships

Unless you are an ecommerce site, the goal you should be striving to achieve with every visit to your website is to convert that visitor into a subscriber.
You don’t have to sell them right away. In fact, you almost never should!
It is an age old adage for a reason but we often forget that people buy from those people that they know, like and trust. Don’t go for the sale immediately after the introduction, develop the relationship.
Let them get to know, like and trust you by engaging with your valuable content.  Get their permission (usually in the form of their e-mail address) to send them more, free and valuable content. Don’t rely on them coming back to your site on their own. Stay top of mind by providing them with awesome stuff.
Did I mention you can get more awesome stuff from us by signing up for our newsletter at the top of the sidebar on this page?

Step 7 – Get Links

Did we really make it all the way to the last step of an SEO strategy before mentioning that you need to get some links? Welcome to the new SEO. Links are still a vital component to any SEO strategy but in the post Panda and Penguin world, it is the quality and not the quantity that counts.
There are all kinds of new theories on proper keyword usage, anchor text optimization, the benefits of directories or blog commenting. But truth be told, if you handle the first 6 steps well, the link getting will take care of itself.
Let’s think about this, what do you think will happen if you:
  • Organize your site so fresh, new content is added regularly and is easy to find
  • Do your keyword research so you know your customers’ pain and write about it
  • Create awesome, valuable content, written in language your customers use
  • Share this content with your social media followers as well as your loyal audience via email
  • AND you make it easy for them to share it with their social networks
Do you think you will get some links?
Of course you will. And chances are you will rank for the keywords you chose way back in the beginning because you began with the end in mind!

How to Give Your Link Acquisition a Boost

But if you are finding that you still need a little help acquiring links, here are some link-getting tactics that can help put your SEO efforts over the top in 2013.
  1.  Join social media groups like Google+ Communities, Twitter Chats, Facebook or LinkedIn groups where you can share your content with relevant audiences. Ask them to share and link to your stuff. But remember, this is not about gaming the system…you MUST create content worth sharing if you expect people to share it. Also, you will need to reciprocate by sharing other people’s stuff; you want to set a precedent that only the best stuff will get the love.
  2. Check out the tribes on Triberr. I’m sure you can find some bloggers who are like minded and also need some help getting their stuff promoted and shared. Maybe they even show up on each other’s blogs and post comments. Some tribes may even link to each other. Again, this isn’t about gaming the system. It is about promoting your awesome, original content in a way that is organic and natural. Triberr may be the most under-rated social media network on the internet and if you commit to producing content, commit to developing relationships on Triberr.
  3. Do some guest posting. Now that you are consistently creating content for your site, create some of your best stuff for other people’s sites. If your stuff is good other businesses will be happy to publish it and you will get exposure to a whole new audience who can share and link to your content. You can (usually) also write your own author bio which should contain links back to your site. This is a great opportunity to optimize the anchor text and establish your relevance for your top level keywords.
Notice that we refer to these 3 tactics as link getting tactics not link building tactics. This is on purpose. Traditional link building, where you don’t really care where the links are coming from, is dying.
You need to make sure your links are high quality and on relevant sites. Basically, you need to create content that people want to link to. You are not going to actively “build” links anymore, now you need to get them by earning them.
When you earn your links you do not need to worry about the latest algorithm update. You don’t have to freak about the latest cute animal, Google has unleashed on the world.
Your rankings will stay secure because you will have shown that people want to find your content and Google wants to show content that real people want to read!

4 SEO Factors that will Become Less Important Over Time

  1. Page Rank/Domain Authority: More authoritative (PR) sites will not (automatically) dominate search engines in the future as they often do today. Why?
Just because a website has a high page rank doesn’t mean it should automatically be given more love by a search engine. Giving too much credit to high Page Ranking sites is the classic example of “The Rich Get Richer, the Poor Get Poorer.”

To make an analogy, if SEO was a team sport today, based on the existing algorithms, almost all the starters would be the team veterans. And the rookies, despite their (potentially) superior abilities, would play much less– simply because they’re rookies. This, as you might imagine, makes no sense in the sports world and it shouldn’t happen in the world of SEO either—but it does, a LOT.
  1. Site (Domain) Age: This goes hand-in-hand with Page Rank but it comes down to this: New and future websites should NOT be punished because they weren’t around during the golden age of SEO and search engines. This “first mover advantage” shouldn’t hold so much weight, but unfortunately, it does.
Take as an example my swimming pool company. Because we dominated search with our “They Ask, You Answer” content marketing philosophy starting in 2009, we now stand on top of the SEO mountain for our industry and it’s going to be very, very hard for anyone in the future to knock us off this mountain. That being said, if I were a new swimming pool company I would hate to be punished simply because my business didn’t exist during the early days of SEO.
Hopefully you see my point. This first mover advantage is flawed, as it punishes every new business going forward, and somehow, Google and the rest of the search engines are going to have to address this issue.
  1. Social Signals: Many SEO pundits think social will play a bigger and bigger role on search rankings going forward. I do not share this belief. Sure, it may happen for a time, but eventually it will be eliminated because social shares can be too easily manipulated to make a piece of content “appear” worthy of a higher ranking. Furthermore, platforms like Facebook and Twitter come and go, which makes building metrics around said platforms problematic. And finally, because Google and Facebook are becoming massive competitors, do you really think Google will want any part of their algorithm to be impacted by a competitor??
  2. Inbound Links (Backlinks): Although I think the number of Inbound Links/Backlinks a webpage has pointing to it will always be somewhat relevant to SEO, I foresee it becoming less and less of a factor. Why? For starters, it can be manipulated. Also, as stated above, inbound links favor older content, and as searchers seek out the “latest and greatest” info within any field, search engines will be forced to give less and less weight to inbound links in an effort to keep content as fresh and up to date as possible.
When all is said and done, Google and other search engines have one obsession:
They want to give you the most specific answer to your specific question/search query.

What will Matter Most for SEO Going Forward

Going forward, specificity of content will continue to become more and more important. Also, search engines will reward the “teacher”—in other words, not the piece of content that is looking to sound smart, but rather the piece of content that has the goal of communion with the reader/searcher. In a quick nutshell, I see the following SEO factors becoming VERY significant in the coming years:
  1. Time on Site: Time is man’s greatest resource. It’s also going to be one of Google’s greatest judges of the best content the web has to offer.
  2. Bounce Rate: If they quickly come and go, you’ve got a problem
  3. Freshness of Content: It better be up to date
  4. Meaty/thorough Content: Searchers don’t just want answers—they want GREAT answers
  5. Mobile: Your content better look great on every screen, no matter the size
  6. Transparency/Honesty: People don’t want to read biased content. They want honesty and transparency, and search engines will get better and better at giving it to them.
  7. Multimedia: Content that shows in multiple forms (like a blog post that includes text and video) will outperform content that uses just one means of communication.

New Era and New Rules for SEO

The rules for effective SEO have shifted seismically over the past few years. Experts offer tips on the current state of SEO and how you can use it to maximize your investment in content in 2016.

Marketers are beefing up their investments in content, but to leverage those investments, they’ll also have to put some time and effort into learning the new rules for SEO. The days of driving traffic to your site by packing headlines with keywords are long gone, experts say, and the new SEO strategy revolves around another big-money marketing focus: experience.

“Historically, the recommendations around SEO have been … to focus on keywords,” says Martin Laetsch, director of online marketing at Beaverton, Ore.-based marketing automation company and SEO consultancy Act-On Software Inc. “The reality is search engines are getting much smarter. The content creator is having a lot less control over how their pages are showing up and what words they’re showing up for.”

According to an August 2015 study on the future of SEO by Moz Inc., a Seattle-based SEO consulting company, the most important factors for SEO impact next year will be mobile-friendliness, which will increase in impact by 88%; analysis of a page’s perceived value (up 81%); usage data such as dwell time (up 67%); and readability and design (up 67%). SEO factors that the study reported will decrease in impact are the effectiveness of paid links (down 55%) and the influence of anchor text (down 49%).

Here, experts offer six tips on how to use SEO to maximize your content marketing investments.

1. Intention is everything.

You no longer need an exact keyword to offer a relevant search result, says Cyrus Shepard, director of audience development at Moz. “In the old days, it was about getting the click. Now search engines are seeing how people are interacting with your website: Are they going back and clicking on results, or are they finding the answers they’re looking for when they’re on your site? Today it’s about the post-click activity. Not only do you have to get the clicks, but you have to satisfy user intent.”

2. Keywords aren’t the be-all and end-all.

Including keywords in headlines is becoming less important, Shepard says. “Google has gotten better about interpreting meaning. It used to be that if you wanted to rank for ‘best restaurants,’ you had to say ‘best restaurants’ three or four times. It’s still helpful to mention ‘best restaurants,’ but the semantic meaning is becoming much more important. Now you can just talk about great dining experiences, and the search engines will pick up on it.”

Adds Laetsch: “Historically, we wanted to get a keyword in the body copy or in the meta description. Now that’s all gone out the window. As the search engines get smarter, they start to think about other words that you expect to be in that article, what will signal that this is an authoritative article on the topic. If you were writing an article about the Apple Watch, you might have the words ‘Apple,’ ‘iPhone,’ ‘Watch,’ ‘apps’ and ‘time.’ If those are in the body copy, it sends signals to the search engines that this is a pretty good article.”

Seventy-five percent of search queries are between three and five words long, so you should write headlines accordingly, he adds. “The search engines are figuring out that if people search for the word ‘marketing,’ or any one- or two-word query, they don’t get the results they want. To get quality results that are most likely to answer their question, they have to go to three-, four- or five-word queries. As content creators, when you’re thinking about optimization, you have to think about that.”

3. Focus on the user experience.

"Google, right now, is making 500 algorithm changes a year,” Laetsch says. “Every change is focused on making sure that when someone searches on Google, if they get the right result on the first few pages, they’ve got a great experience. It’s not, ‘How am I going to tweak the engine or trick Google, Bing or Yahoo?’ It’s how you make sure that your content is the best possible content on the Internet for the words that you care about.”

Thus, original content is becoming more important than ever, says Rhea Drysdale, CEO of Outspoken Media Inc., a Troy, N.Y.-based SEO consulting firm. “The more original content that you can produce—whether it’s an image or a video, or long-form content, anything you can put together that’s going to justify someone wanting to read it or share it—the better.”

While articles with a “top five” list format often are clickable, Drysdale suggests using them sparingly. “People like things that they can quickly digest, but it doesn’t necessarily have much weight with search,” she says. “You have to make sure that whatever comes after the number makes sense and is useful.”

Create an editorial calendar to appeal to your customers’ interests, Laetsch says. “That’s the most important thing that a marketer can do for SEO in 2016. Your content has to be original and targeted to your audience. If you curate content, take a paragraph from another article or site, and give them full credit and add an attribution, but add a paragraph or two in your own voice: ‘Here’s why I think it’s relevant.’ You’re adding a journalistic voice and making it your own.”

4. Size matters.

Longer articles, between 1,200 to 1,500 words, perform better in search, on average, Laetsch says. “It’s significantly different than it was two or three years ago, when 300 words was a pretty long page. Longer articles are getting more traffic, and they’re ranking higher in SEO, especially for competitive terms. The changes that Google is making, and the reason they’re making these changes, is to make sure they’re sending traffic to pages that delight humans.” He suggests breaking up long-form content with subheads, bullet points and images throughout the copy to make it easy for readers to more quickly scan and digest it.

Longer articles perform better in search results because there are more words and images to rank on the page, Shepard says. “People are sharing longer articles on social media more, and linking to them and citing them more. Shorter articles do well sometimes, but on average, longer articles tend to perform better.”

5. Optimize for mobile.

More people are reading news on their smart phones, so it’s important to ensure that your content is searchable there, says Derek Edmond, managing partner and director of SEO and social media strategies at KoMarketing Associates, a Boston-based B-to-B SEO and social media marketing consultancy. “Making sure Google can understand the content that’s found within a mobile app, and leveraging the marketing of the app with respect to SEO, is an opportunity on the consumer and B-to-B marketing side.”

6. Use unique images.

While images aren’t as big of a referral source in Google as they used to be, having unique images on your site is valuable, Shepard says. “The same image can show up in hundreds of places around the Web, but having unique content around those images is what makes it stand out. I’m not opposed to using stock images to illustrate a point, but any time you can create something that’s custom or use unique photography, that will pay off more in the long run.”

The most important SEO tip for 2016 is to focus on your audience, Shepard says. “In the past, it was about marketers trying to promote what they wanted people to see. Today it’s about delivering what people actually want to see that will give you an SEO ranking boost.”

Adds Laetsch: “The reason we’re doing optimization and want to show up in Google, Bing or Yahoo is not because we make money because we show up No. 1 or No. 2. The reason we want to rank well in the search engine is so that our audience, the people we’re trying to reach, have a great experience. It doesn’t matter how high you rank if your target audience goes to your site and they’re not happy.”
